Healthcare workers thanked for ‘extending God’s work’ at annual Mass
The annual Mass, which took place on Sunday February 9, pays homage to the hard work of the people who care for the sick.
Motherwell Diocese paid tribute to doctors, nurses, carers and others who work in the healthcare sector at an annual special Mass.
Professionals from all branches of the health service flocked to Our Lady of Good Aid Cathedral for the annual White Mass, celebrated by Bishop Joseph Toal.
The annual Mass, which took place on Sunday February 9, pays homage to the hard work of the people who care for the sick.
The bishop thanked the healthcare workers for their services and met with a group of doctors, nurses and carers, including Dr John Paul O’Sullivan, organiser of the Mass.
Inspiration
Dr John Paul O’Sullivan said: “Many Catholics feel inspired to enter work in healthcare as a result of their Catholic Faith and the White Mass is an opportunity to say thank you for that Faith and ongoing inspiration.
“I think doctors, nurses and healthcare workers have many intentions which they wish to pray for regarding their work and the White Mass is a great opportunity for that.”
Unfortunately, storm Ciara stifled this year’s attendance, as Dr O’Sullivan said only around 12-14 were able to attend, but he added he hopes it ‘becomes more established’ and that ‘attendance will grow year on year.’
Dr O’Sullivan thanked Bishop Toal, the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland and cathedral clergy for the Mass.
God’s work
Fr William Bergin, chaplain to Carstairs State Hospital and parish priest of St David’s Church, Plains and St Mary’s Church, Caldercruix, has been a chaplain for much of his life in the priesthood, having served in a wide range of hospitals previously when he served in Hallam Diocese, Sheffield.
He said: “I think White Masses are not only a nice thing to have for healthcare professionals, but I think they recognise how is God working through the genius of people in the healthcare sector.
“The White Mass recognises that these people whose skill I stand back in awe at are very much a part of the healing ministry of God and are an extended hand of His who care for His people.
“These people do the most amazing things and this is the Church’s way of giving them due credit.”
